The Taoiseach will address the European Parliament tomorrow in Strasbourg on the outcome and achievements of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council.

The debate with MEPs will also focus on the agreement negotiated by the Irish Presidency on the Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF), the EU’s €960bn investment programme for 2014-2020, ahead of the Parliament’s vote on the MFF on Wednesday.

Speaking before his departure to Strasbourg, the Taoiseach said:

“When I addressed the Parliament in early January, I outlined our priorities of Stability, Jobs and Growth and our commitment to working closely with the Parliament during our Presidency.

I am proud to say that, working with our partners and the other EU institutions, most notably this Parliament, we have overwhelmingly delivered on the ambitions set out in our six-month programme. The many positive results achieved show that Europe can deliver for its citizens..

The political agreement on the MFF will unlock funding for a range of measures to stimulate growth and to target youth unemployment in the EU. It is a good deal for Europe and I hope that the Parliament will give its consent in Wednesday’s vote.”

Ahead of the debate, the Taoiseach will have a bilateral meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz. The debate will be followed by a press point with the Taoiseach and President Schulz.
